Leading Eating Disorders Treatment Center, Remuda Ranch, Celebrates International No Diet Day

PHOENIX, April 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Millions of Americans have tried dieting and have ultimately failed. Diets don't work because they are unsustainable and bring about feelings of guilt. In order to increase awareness of the pitfalls of dieting, Remuda Ranch, the nation's leading eating disorders treatment center, celebrates International No Diet Day on May 6, 2011.

"Every day we see the devastating consequences of eating disorders that started innocently with a diet," said Dena Cabrera, PsyD, director of educational outreach at Remuda Ranch. "Diets don't work. The $50 billion diet industry confirms this truth. We have seen firsthand not only the medical compromise brought on by a quest to lose weight, but also the mental health issues that individuals suffer because of diets."

Research shows that 89 percent of women want to lose weight and 60 percent are on a diet at any given time. Men of all ages are also affected by our weight conscious society and are subject to the thin images projected by many media outlets.

"An innocent quest to lose extra weight by dieting can result in anxiety, depression and low self esteem," adds Cabrera. "Because people often engage in drastic behaviors to diet, many times personalities are altered, energy is compromised and health is neglected."

Cabrera reports real changes needed for success are all about improving lifestyle habits in ways that will last. This means making gradual changes toward active living, moderation, balance and variety in eating, relieving stress and letting weight come off as a result of changed habits. The weight will stay off because of lifestyle changes and one's metabolism will support the change.

"As a society, we need to embrace diverse shapes and sizes in all individuals," said Cabrera. "We currently have a narrow definition of beauty and health. By using these idealized standards of beauty we are missing out on a majority of people who are beautiful, healthy and well. Other parameters besides weight, shape and size need to be used to define health and beauty."

Parents of Eating Disorder Sufferers Needed for Important Research

Are you a parent of a child with an eating disorder?

Take an online parent opinion survey (15-20 minutes) to help fellow parents of children with eating disorders! Click here to complete the survey: http://tinyurl.com/ParentExperience.

Parent volunteers needed for a research study.

If you are a parent of a child (of any age) who is currently being treated for an eating disorder, you may be eligible to be in a study about your experiences. Researchers at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are interested in the experiences of caregivers to learn what families who have been affected by a child’s eating disorder need most. The surveys do not ask for medical information and responses are kept confidential.

How/When/Where?

You can participate in the first survey anytime before April 30th. A second survey will then be emailed to you in 8-12 weeks. Both surveys are completed online. If you would like more information, please email or call the study coordinators: Autumn Shafer at shafer@unc.edu or Sheetal Patel at 512-626-3616.

Click this link to complete the online survey: http://tinyurl.com/ParentExperience.

Who can participate?

Mothers and/or fathers of a child (of any age) who has an eating disorder. Your child must be receiving
treatment at a clinic, therapist, hospital, or residential facility. If you have previously completed a similar
survey from UNC or Duke, we thank you for participation but ask that you do not repeat the questionnaire!

Eating Disorders and Suicide

By Remuda Ranch

There are many reasons why suicide is so common in the eating disorder population. Perhaps the greatest factor is the prevalence of depression in these individuals. Approximately 90% of those with an eating disorder are also clinically depressed. This is a very dangerous combination. In fact, the incident of suicide in this group is markedly higher than in those who struggle exclusively with depression.

Parental Involvement Important in the Prevention and Awareness of Eating Disorders

By Jacquelyn Ekern, MS, LPC, Founder and Director of Eating Disorder Hope and Debra Cooper, Expert Writer on eating disorders

Approximately 11 million women and girls struggle with anorexia and bulimia. Although the average age of onset is 14, girls are being diagnosed as young as eight.

In years past, an eating disorder stereotype existed. This person was female, white, usually first-born or an only child, a high-achiever and from an affluent family. That stereotype is long gone. Eating disorders flourish in every culture, race, ethnicity, social-economic group, and religion throughout our country. Anorexia and bulimia are also on the rise in the male population.

Parents can play an important role in the prevention of eating disorders. Throughout a child's life, food should never be used as a reward or punishment. Healthy, balanced eating should be modeled in the home. Exercise should be done for fun and health, not weight loss.

Remuda Ranch Programs for Eating and Anxiety Disorders provides intensive treatment to women and girls. We treat anorexia, bulimia, anxiety, and related issues. Women and girls stay for 45-60 days, which is the minimum time required for true and lasting change to occur. Treatment takes place in peaceful ranch-like settings in Arizona and Virginia. Patients receive an individualized treatment plan designed to meet their precise medical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs. Each woman and girl has a multi-disciplinary treatment team dedicated to helping her get well. This team includes a psychiatric specialist, a primary care physician, a registered dietitian, a licensed master's or doctoral-level therapist, a psychologist, and registered nurses. EATING DISORDER TREATMENT PROGRAM at SeaSide Palm Beach

The EATING DISORDER TREATMENT PROGRAM at SeaSide Palm Beach specializes in helping individuals who suffer from a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders, which is when an individual suffers simultaneously from both a psychiatric disorder (like an eating disorder) as well as a substance abuse problem (like alcohol abuse or drug abuse).

Most people are very surprised to learn that eating disorders have little to do with food. Especially when one considers that many people who suffer from eating disorders actually have an unhealthy obsession with food. In the majority of cases, eating disorders have more to do with a lack of emotional well-being resulting from their inability to identify and communicate their own needs and wants effectively to others.

To find out more please call us 24/7 toll-free at (888) 432-2467 today for help!

Gotta Have It! Freedom from wanting everything right here, right now

By Dr. Gregory L. Jantz with Ann McMurray @www.aplaceofhope.com

This book is about needs and wants, about the excessities of life, which is a made-up word for a very real situation for many people. Excessities occur when our excesses become necessities. This book is about the compulsion to overindulge in any number of bizarre, comical and not-so-funny behaviors. Excessity is the Gotta Have It! impulse that throws caution to the wind and demands immediate satisfaction. It is the blindness that occurs when comfort becomes more important than consequences.

Gotta Have It! shows up in a variety of shapes and sizes, each excessity taking on the unique characteristics of the person who creates it. This book looks at it, not from the safety of a front page story about someone else, but close up, right now, in our own lives and the lives of those we love.

Excessity is, at the heart, about feeding our wants and desires, while at the same time starving our true needs. The more we starve what we really need, the greater our hunger grows so we stuff ourselves with more and more of our wants. We stuff ourselves full of our wants and still find that we're starving, empty and desperate.

Eating Disorders and Suicide

@ Remuda Ranch

Eating disorders are physically devastating diseases. The medical consequences of anorexia and bulimia include everything from anemia and bone loss to intestinal issues and infertility. The good news is that if caught early and treated, most of these medical problems can be reversed and health can be restored. However, what cannot be resolved is the high mortality rate associated with these disorders. A full 10% of those struggling with an eating disorder will die from it. These deaths often occur as a result of cardiac damage or other extreme medical complications. A lesser known, but profoundly important, cause of death is suicide. Recent research indicates that suicide is a major cause of death among those with anorexia. Although suicide can and does occur in those struggling with bulimia, it is less frequent and more a result of an impulsive act vs. a planned action.

There are many reasons why suicide is so common in the eating disorder population. Perhaps the greatest factor is the prevalence of depression in these individuals. Approximately 90% of those with an eating disorder are also clinically depressed. This is a very dangerous combination. In fact, the incident of suicide in this group is markedly higher than in those who struggle exclusively with depressio....finish article @ http://www.eatingdisorderhope.com/article-eating-disorders-and-suicide-remuda-ranch.html

Are you a parent of a child with an eating disorder?

Take an online parent opinion survey (15-20 minutes) to help fellow parents of children with eating disorders!

How/When/Where?

You can participate in the first survey anytime before April 15th. A second survey will then be emailed to you in 8-12 weeks. Both surveys are completed online. Email or call the study coordinators: Autumn Shafer at shafer@unc.edu or Sheetal Patel at 512-626-3616. In your email, mention the Parent Experiences Survey and where (city and state) your child is currently receiving treatment. The study coordinators will send you the online link and any other information you request. The surveys do not ask for medical information and responses are kept confidential.

Who can participate?

Mothers and/or fathers of a child (of any age) who has an eating disorder. Your child must be receiving treatment at a clinic, therapist, hospital, or residential facility. If you have previously completed a similar survey from UNC or Duke, we thank you for participation but ask that you do not repeat the questionaire.

Eating Disorders Not Just for White Teen Girls

Stigma Causes Other Groups to Remain Silent About Eating Disorder

At the peak of her eating disorder, Stephanie Covington Armstrong threw up 15 times a day. Any food in her stomach made her uncomfortable, and it was only when she vomited that "everything was right with the world," even if only five minutes until she would do it again.

It was like crack, she said. Drugs and alcohol seemed messy but binging and purging offered that same high; the kind of high that would take away the self-hatred that constantly weighed her down.

For seven years, Armstrong's bulimia was her deepest secret. And as a black woman, Armstrong said, carrying the stigma of an eating disorder was even worse.

"There is that shame of not being a strong black woman," said Armstrong, a Los Angeles playwright and author of the book, "Not All Black Girls Know How to Eat."

"People would ask me, 'What, do you want to be white or something?'"

More than 10 million Americans suffer from some kind of eating disorder, and many of them are not white, young or female, according to the National Eating Disorders Association.

Dr. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt, executive director of the Oliver-Pyatt Centers in Florida, said that, at any given time, at least half of her patients are not what society typically thinks of someone having an eating disorder: people older then 40, mothers, men and minorities.

"Minorities, men and older people have an even more difficult time," said Oliver-Pyatt, speaking on behalf of the National Eating Disorders Association. "It's almost culturally accepted for a young white woman to have an eating disorder."
